January 24, 2000 Report PlugIns and Coding Tips Chuck Schumacher, BizWare Reports are the most volatile part of most applications. Users never seem to run out of new things to ask for, or changes they must have RIGHT NOW. Providing a "do-it-yourself" report creation facility is sometimes a good solution, but there is often still a need for some "canned" reports. And, for many systems, especially financial applications, it's usually important to make sure all users are working from the same version of a report. So wouldn't it be nice if you could deploy your reports separately from the main application? Some third-party report generators (e.g., Crystal Reports) make it fairly easy to do this, but Quick Reports doesn't support this capability...or does it? Chuck Schumacher will demonstrate a technique he's developed that allows you to deploy your reports as separate "plug-ins", which are automatically down-loaded and installed into the application at run-time, ensuring that everyone always uses the current version. And he'll also have a few coding tips to help you solve some problems you might not even know you have. |
